PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - April 15 is a day many Americans dread. Monday is the last day to either file a tax return or an extension.
Post offices are open, so be sure to check with specific locations for its operating hours.
According to the Internal Revenue Service , 50 million Americans don't start the tax filing process until April. Because of this, the IRS recommends electronic filing. They claim e-returns are likely to be 20 times more accurate than manual returns.
For tax filers who can't make Monday's deadline, they can file a six month extension through the IRS website or through other tax preparation sites.
Meanwhile, with April 15 falling on a state holiday, Massachusetts residents have been given an extra day to meet the deadline for filing their state income taxes.
But the same is not true for federal taxes.
Monday is Patriots Day, a legal holiday in Massachusetts marking the first battles of the Revolutionary War. State offices will be closed that day.
State tax returns can be filed through Tuesday, April 16.
But a spokeswoman for the IRS says the federal tax deadline remains Monday, the same as the rest of the nation.
