PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Police are investigating an early morning shooting that happened just steps away from an area busy with students.
According to police, several employees at a nearby hookah bar heard gunshots, and ran outside to see a Chrysler Sedan fleeing from the scene. Police believe that same car was transporting a shooting victim to the hospital.
Police say 18-year-old Edgar Mendez was shot, and three other teens were also in the car.
Rhode Island School of Design students said this type of incident is out of character for the usually safe and tourist-filled area.
"It's really strange. I don't anticipate anything like that over here out of all the places in Providence," said RISD student Karen Lee.
Student Rachael Lewis said she heard what sounded like firecrackers, though she never thought to look outside.
"That is kind of rare around here, it is definitely really safe," she said.
According to police, the teens inside the sedan that fled the scene were uncooperative, and told officers different versions of what had happened.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
