CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Several Rhode Island schools were affected by burst pipes Monday, brought on by recent freezing temperatures.

Cranston High School East will remain closed Tuesday while crews try to deal with a water issue there, Superintendent Jeannine Nota-Masse confirmed during a Monday afternoon news conference. School officials canceled classes just after 6 a.m. after they learned of a burst pipe there.

Also in Cranston, Edgewood Highland Elementary School remains closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after a water main ruptured last Wednesday, causing "significant" water damage to the school.

In Warwick, School Superintendent Philip Thornton confirmed Tollgate High School will reopen Tuesday after burst water pipes forced an early dismissal Monday morning.

Earlier Monday, Thornton's secretary said students were initially moved to Winman Middle School before being sent home for the day.

There was a school board meeting scheduled in Tollgate's auditorium for Tuesday. However, since that room was affected by the pipe issue, she is working on finding a new location. Any change in venue would need the approval of the Secretary of State's Office.

Also in Warwick, several city offices were closed Monday due to water damaged caused by a burst pipe in the City Hall Annex building. The offices closed include Tax Collector, Tax Assessor, Building Department and Planning Department. A secretary at City Hall said these offices will be moving temporarily to the John Greene Elementary School until further notice.

The city said the online payment portal is available for those who need to pay tax bills. In addition, the Tax Collector's Office is in the process of moving temporarily into the lower level conference room in City Hall.

In Bristol, Mount Hope High School was closed Monday due to water main issues as well. School Superintendent Mario J. Andrade confirmed that school will also reopen Tuesday.

Several area schools, including Fall River Public Schools, had delays Monday morning as well, and a full list is available on WPRI's closings page.
