JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Holes remain in the old Johnston Motor Lodge on Rt. 6 -- afterpolice say a 41-year-old homeless man ripped 29 air conditionersout of the walls, took them away and sold them for scrap.
The police told the Providence Journal that Devin Harvey hadbeen living next to the motel (which was condemned and shut down inJune because of septic system problems). His home was thenforeclosed upon. Two weeks ago, he broke into the motel and startedliving in there. They found him on Sunday when a passer-by sawsmoke coming from the building.
Harvey had kicked holes in the walls between each room, JohnstonPolice said, to gain access to the next unit and steal the airconditioners, as well as copper piping.
Police said he sold the metal items to local scrap-metalcompanies.
Harvey's charges include breaking and entering, larceny over$500, and vandalism.
