PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Post Office is expected to handle billions of packages this week, as last-minute gifts go out ahead of Christmas.
The Monday before Christmas is typically the busiest shipping day of the year for the U.S. Postal Service. It's also when 90 percent of all online retailers offer free shipping.
Postal officials say people planning to send out packages Monday or Tuesday should come to the Post Office with their packages ready to go. They remind people not to use masking tape, since it can rip and tear, or duct tape, which can get caught in the machinery.
"Monday is the day for on-time delivery by Christmas, but if you're sending First Class Mail, December 20 is fine," said Post Office spokesperson Christine Dugas.
The Post Office does deliver on Christmas Day, though it costs extra.
