(FOX Providence) - Many people set out making New Year's resolutions to better themselves, but this year, why not help those in need in your own community as a resolution.

Dory Faxon from Blessings in a Backpack joined The Rhode Show to talk more about a local program that is helping underprivileged children living in Providence.

"What the program does is it sends kids home on the weekend during the school year, with a backpack full of food staples. And we're in three schools right now," said Faxon.

Typical Backpack Food Items

The backpacks include ready-to-eat food items such as granola bars, peanut butter, tuna, crackers, mac & cheese, cereal, juice boxes, etc. Blessings in a Backpack reviews its standard menu with a nutritionist annually to make sure the food is kid-friendly, nutritious, non-perishable and easy-to-prepare. Please be aware, most of these kids live in a world where some food is better than no food.

The backpack costs $80, and that covers the cost for one child in a school year.

"It's a big impact for not a lot of money," said Faxon.
