Choosing the right running gear

Inaugural Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon

(FOX Providence) - The Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon is just weeks away, and by now, some people might start wondering how to pick the right shoes and gear for your race.

Patricia Steele from Brooks Sports joined The Rhode Show with some helpful tips.

Tips for finding the right running/training apparel:

  • Moisture-wicking fabrics are essential, especially in a shirt, since a shirt will be in direct contact with your skin.
  • Shorts or shirts with zip or mesh pockets are perfect for carrying gels on a long run or during a marathon.
  • Running shorts with a built-in mesh liner are cooler and more comfortable than wearing a separate undergarment with unlined shorts.
  • Dress for 20 degrees warmer than the thermometer says. The key to staying comfortable is lightweight layers, rather than one heavy layer.
  • Good quality padded, moisture-wicking socks will last for a few years and it is worth the money to get a few pairs. The moisture-wicking trait is especially important because sweaty or wet feet are more likely to blister.
  • If you run early in the morning, at night, or during rainy weather, it is important to wear bright, reflective apparel pieces, such as a vest, jacket, or hat.

Tips for finding the right running shoes:

  1. First you must determine if you need a neutral shoe or a stability shoe. People with high arches need a neutral running shoe with a lot of flexibility. People with medium/low arches or flat feet usually overpronate (ankles roll in when walking or running) and should wear running shoes with stability. The more a person overpronates, the more arch support they should look for in a shoe.
  2. Next, make sure you get the right size. You will probably wear a half size to a full size larger in a running shoe. You want at least a half inch of space at the front of the shoe.
  3. Lastly, you want to make sure the shoe feels comfortable and breathable from day 1. If it feels uncomfortable now, imagine what it will feel like after 30 minutes of running.
  4. You can visit your local running store to have a professional help you pick the best shoes for your foot.
  5. Make sure you are replacing your shoes every 300-500 miles or 4-6 months.

Volunteers Needed for Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence

If you're unsure about running a half marathon, or maybe have a friend or loved one running the race, you can show your support by volunteering at the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon on Sunday, August 7th.

More than 7,000 runners are expected to take on the 13.1 mile challenge, which starts and finishes in downtown Providence near the State House.

Live bands, cheerleaders and spectators will offer entertainment and motivation every step of the way. But it’s the hundreds of volunteers manning water stations, medical teams and race crews that provide the real support.

“Local community involvement is so important and is the key to a successful event,” said Shannon Davis, Event Manager. “It’s also a great experience for people to enjoy the race from a different perspective and also have fun doing it.”

Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence has open volunteer positions available at the Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, August 5th and Saturday, August 6th, as well as on race day at the Start Line and Finish Line areas as members of either the Race Crew or the Medical Team.

All volunteers will receive an official Race Crew t-shirt and backpack. Those who sign up to help can also receive discounts on Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence registration.
