RI is home to many local farms

Farming in the Ocean State

(FOX Providence) - It may look like Midwestern farmland, but really it’s just in our back yard. The Ocean State is home to many local farms.

These farms were started decades ago, and have been maintained by local families for generations. They depend on local customers. By buying local products, it puts money directly back into the state’s economy.

Today’s farms have evolved to become more specialized and modernized, but the hard work ethic remains.

Peter Rundlett, Farm Manager of Moonstone Gardens said, “As a farmer you wear many different hats.”

He not only grows the crops, but also has all the responsibilities that come along with being a small business owner.

Today’s agricultural system resembles that of the early 1800s where there were multiple small farms, doing many different things. Today’s farms still have livestock, fruits, and vegetables, but typically do without the square dancing in the barns.
