(WPRI) -- A serious snowstorm has the potential to cause widespread power outages like a thunderstorm or hurricane, so the Red Cross offered some helpful tips for those dealing with a blackout during the winter.
One of the most important things to do is safeguard your food. Open your refrigerator door as little as possible, and be sure to eat the food in your fridge first before moving on to anything in the freezer, which will last much longer.
It's also vital to unplug as much electrical equipment as possible. Once the power comes back on, surges or spikes could severely damage your appliances or chargers.
Lastly, if you're utilizing a portable generator, be sure to follow the proper steps for safe use. The most important thing is to not run them inside your home or garage, since they emit carbon monoxide, a dangerous toxin.
