PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI ) – In addition to the tens of thousands of power outages, many homes in Southern New England are now without heat.

One of the leading causes of death during a winter storm is hypothermia, and even inside your home you are at risk if you don’t have any heat.

1. Put on several layers of thin clothing: Most people think about bundling up in heavy coats, but that could cause you to overheat and sweat and could cause a chill. Tight fitting under armor under layers of clothing will serve you best.

2. Make sure you have plenty of high calorie foods: Foods such as peanut butter and bagels will help keep your body insulated.

3. Shut Blinds: This will help keep heat inside your home.

4. Do not use kerosene: Using heating elements like this force carbon monoxide into your home.
