PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A recent spate of sledding injuries during the December blizzard has Rhode Island Hospital taking steps to protect kids playing in the snow.
The hospital's Injury Prevention Center has teamed up with Hasbro Children's Hospital to provide free snow helmets to patients, hospital officials announced Thursday. Children who are brought into Hasbro's emergency department for snow-related injuries will receive the helmets.
Hospital officials said three children were brought into Hasbro Children's Hospital during last month's blizzard for sledding accidents. One child who was not wearing a helmet had a serious head injury.
A recent study in the journal Pediatrics found about 20,000 children are taken to emergency rooms every year for sledding accidents.
