Mass. Dept. of Transportation prepares for weekend's winter storm

4,000 plows at the ready, crews to pre-salt roads

MASSACHUSETTS, (WPRI) -- New Englanders are hardly strangers to severe winter conditions, but even the most seasoned veterans at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) are taking this weekend’s expected storm very seriously.

"MassDOT is gearing up right now," said Sara Lavoie, a MassDOT employee.

With the first snow expected to fall tomorrow, MassDOT is working hard to make sure they are prepared for anything. 4,000 private plow contractors are on-call and ready to hit the road at the first sign of inclement weather, and crews will begin pre-treating roads with salt and liquid deicers beginning Friday.

“We’ve been taking loads of salt to replenish our supplies across Massachusetts,” said Lavoie. “Hopefully, everyone is resting up because this will be a long event.”

MassDOT is urging people to rely on public transportation rather than driving their own vehicles this weekend.

This will be the 15th storm MassDOT has handled this winter season. View their winter driving tips here .
