How to preserve food without power

Tips on making food last despite power outages

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- This weekend's blizzard has resulted in tens of thousands of power outages across the region, and it looks like some residents may be without electricity for the next few days.

Having no power will affect the way we preserve food. Here are some tips to make your food supply last while the electric companies work to restore the power in your neighborhood.

  1. Keep refrigerators and freezers closed: Each time you open your fridge or freezer, you're releasing some of its cold air and allowing warm air in. Make sure the inside of your refrigerator is 40 degrees of less, and your freezer is 0 degrees or less.
  2. Put your food outside, but first:
    1. Make sure the food is sealed in a waterproof container.
    2. Place in shady spot.
    3. Never use cardboard containers, as they allow snow and water to contaminate the food.
