PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The Emergency Management Agency in Providence is the hub of communication for the city as the blizzard begins to hit Rhode Island with force.
The EMA has new technology put in place this year, such as a screen outlining what roads in the city are plowed, not plowed, or impossible to pass through.
GPS trackers allow EMA workers and plow drivers to better plot their path and consider most viable options.
The ‘tweet deck’ is also projected on a large screen, so they can monitor city officials to gain a better understanding of what is happening in specific areas.
EMA officials say they won't stop until the storm is over.
“We have been in the Emergency Operations Center since 7 this morning, and we will stay until it’s done, probably Sunday morning,” said Peter Gaynor from the Providence EMA.
Gaynor explains that about 140 plows are ready to hit Providence streets, with about 50 currently in operation.
“If you are home, thank you for being home. If you’re not home – please go home,” said Gaynor.
EMA officials emphasize that safety of both residents and plow drivers are the priority of the Providence EMA during the blizzard.
