PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) has created suggestions on how to stay safe during a severe weather storm.
RIEMA officials have warned the state of Rhode Island to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary due to the strong winds and low visibility a blizzard creates.
The fewer cars on the road, the easier it will be for emergency vehicles and snowplows to travel.
The National Weather Service will be constantly tracking the storm so state officials urge everyone to pay attention for up to date information.
RIEMA urges anyone who loses power to stay warm by using emergency generators and alternate heating methods, but to be wary of potential carbon monoxide dangers.
Keep outside vents for heaters and stoves clear of snow, as clogged vents may also pose carbon monoxide dangers and check on neighbors to make sure they're prepared.
Officials caution that if you see a downed power line, stay away from it, and notify the electric utility as soon as possible.
They are also warning about coastal flooding and ask you to stay aware of any local conditions, and cooperate with any local road closures or other emergency measures.
