Study shows high storm frequency in RI

State seeing 90 percent more extreme rain and snow

PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) – A new study reveals that Rhode Island is getting heavier rain storms that it used to.

Channing Jones and his advocacy group, Environment Rhode Island, released a report stating that Rhode Island is getting 90 percent more extreme rain and snow than it did in 1948.

The report defines big rain storms as producing at least 2.6 inches of water in a 24-hour period.

The report also states that New England has the largest amount of heavy storms compared to any other place in the nation.

Jones said that the study itself doesn't prove that there's human-induced climate change, but he said it's one more piece of evidence that supports what recent studies have shown.

It's still not known why Rhode Island’s storm frequency has increased more than the rest of the nation's.
