Volunteer group welcomes help in Sandy cleanup

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI/AP) – It has been over two weeks since Superstorm Sandy hit Rhode Island and some communities still need help with cleanup efforts.

The volunteer group Serve Rhode Island is renewing its appeal for help cleaning up areas of the state hard hit by Sandy.

The group says more than 700 volunteers from all over the state and New England have given their time to help clean up after last month's storm. They've worked in places including Misquamicut Beach in Westerly and Conimicut in Warwick.

Executive Director Bernie Beaudreau says they hope to have 200 volunteers help residents in the Weekapaug Pond shores area this weekend.

On Thursday and Friday, it says a team of AmeriCorps workers will continue work in Westerly. Teams of volunteers are also heading to clean up debris on the shores of Conimicut in Warwick.

Serve Rhode Island believes in neighbors helping neighbors, and says that everyone has a part to play today and into the future.
