PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Traffic officials are encouraging all drivers to get off Rhode Island roads as soon as possible as the state begins to feel the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
The threat of downed trees and power lines is becoming increasingly dangerous, with winds becoming stronger as the storm makes its way north.
“We ask that motorists pay close attention to the weather forecast and get home before conditions worsen,” said DOT Director Michael Lewis. “Just like in a bad snowstorm, don't venture out if you don’t have to.”
RIDOT employees are working hard to ensure clear roads for the time being, though as conditions worsen, they may be called in for their safety. We're told they'll resume work as soon as it's safe enough to do so.
Closures for streets and bridges will be determined as the storm progresses, for the most up-to-date information visit our Storm Beat page.
Highways in Connecticut have been closed to all passenger and commercial vehicles.
