NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) -- The impact of Hurricane Sandy is being felt across Rhode Island, and Gov. Lincoln Chafee took a tour of South County, visiting some of the communities that will be hit the hardest by the storm.

Many onlookers are in Narragansett to catch a glimpse of the growing waves, which are crashing right over the sea wall. Narragansett town beach has all but disappeared, having been completely covered by the surf.

Gov. Chafee, along with Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts, toured the southern tip of the town, speaking with fishermen and residents ahead of the storm.

"Been through this last year, with Irene, and here we are back," said Chafee. "This one's a little bit different, with the storm surge coming and the high tide, you can see how high it is, and this is not as high as it's going to be tonight, this is really going to be a little bit of great concern to us."

The next stop for Gov. Chafee and Lt. Gov. Roberts was supposed to be the area around the Coast Guard House on Ocean Road, though the road has been blocked off as it as been deemed too dangerous.

"People are not panicking, they're just getting organized, you see everything's well taken care of down here," said Lt. Gov. Roberts. "These are professionals, they know what they're doing, and I think we're seeing that all around the state, which is great.
