Coastal communities brace for storm

Residents, businesses preparing for the worst

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) -- While some Southern New Englanders are waiting a little longer to determine how to prepare for the threat of Hurricane Sandy, many living along the coastline aren't taking any chances.

For homes along the coast, it's important to stay ahead of the storm. Many residents are already boarding up windows and moving outdoor furniture inside to protect their homes from whatever the storm brings our way.

"Take that little step, spend that little bit of money now," said Jim Brindis, who spent Friday in Narragansett, helping to prepare homes for the hurricane. "If nothing happens, fine. If something does happen, at least you're prepared for it."

Some homes in the area are built right on the sand, and are utilizing sand bags to prevent possible erosion.

One seaside business has withstood a variety of major storms over the past century, and are hoping to continue their streak with the proper forethought.

Monahan's Clam Shack by the Sea is already closed for the season, but the owner, Matthew Combs, is winterizing the building and starting to prepare for Sandy. His family has owned the business since the early 1900s, and has made it through such storms as the Hurricane of 1938 and Hurricane Bob in 1991.

During those storms, Monahan's had plywood on the windows and all of their furniture was secure, and they plan to do the same this time around.

"I have started to bring stuff inside," said Combs. "I've been warned by some of the locals that it's going to be huge."
