Aerial tour of Aquidneck Island outages

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Lincoln Chafee took an aerial tour on Monday in order to assess the damage left behind from Tropical Storm Irene across the Ocean State.

One of the areas hardest hit was Portsmouth where a transmission line was knocked down by a utility pole at the Montaup Country Club on Anthony Road.

The power line supplies power to Middletown, Portmouth, Newport and Jamestown.

The transmission line has since been restored and was one of 18 knocked down across the state, which in turn left 22 substations in the dark and nearly 275,000 customers statewide.

At last check, roughly 6,955 National Grid customers living in Portsmouth are still without power.

No word on exactly when the power will be restored to residents.
