PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island Go v. Lincoln Chafee has amended his request to President Barack Obama for federal disaster aid to include individuals in storm-damaged Washington and Newport counties.

Obama on Saturday approved Chafee's initial request for federal disaster aid to help repair public buildings and infrastructure in Bristol, Newport and Washington counties damaged by Superstorm Sandy last week. Damage to public facilities is estimated at more than $5.5 million.

Chafee said Sunday that FEMA teams have completed enough assessments to add individuals from Washington and Newport counties to the federal aid request.

The governor is asking for aid for homeowners, disaster unemployment assistance, disaster legal service and crisis counseling as well as loans for small businesses in the two counties.
