PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Democrat David Cicilline has been elected to serve in Congress for Rhode Island's First Congressional District.
Despite a late surge by Republican challenger, state Rep.John Loughlin, Providence's current mayor held on for victory Tuesday night.
When he takes office in January, Cicilline will replace Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who announced earlier this year he would not run for reelection. It will mark the first time in decades Congress will be without a Kennedy in office.
Independents Kenneth Capalbo and Gregory Raposa also ran for the office.
