WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - City officials have called for an investigation into the discovery of two time clocks at the Department of Public Works.

Target 12 has learned, the second clock is set an hour ahead; so a worker can punch in on time, leave on hour early and still get paid. Woonsocket police have questioned several people as part of an on-going investigation.

City Council President Leo Fontaine tells Target 12 he was tipped off to the problem several weeks ago.

"It's a serious matter. I turned it over to police department,” Fontaine said. “They are the proper authorities and it’s my understanding some action has taken place."

One part-time officer worker has already been terminated in the wake of the scandal. The clock was discovered on a shelf behind Highway Superintendent Robert Harnois’ desk. Harnois was unavailable for comment.

The legitimate clock is located in the rear of the DPW in a break room.  Parks and Recreation Director James Cannon tells Eyewitness News approximately 42 employees use the clock from both the Parks and Highway Departments.

He declined comment on the on-going investigation. Sources tell Target 12 investigators could detect if two time clocks were used on one timecard because the legitimate clock prints lighter than the phony clock.

Fontaine said he is unsure if all time cards have been checked yet and declined further comment citing personnel matters.

The Woonsocket police are referring all questions to the DPW. Director Michael Annarummo has not returned our calls.
