PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - It’s an infamous murder-for hire plot pitting two mobsters against each other. The feds says mafia captain Anthony "The Saint" St. Laurent tried to hire hitmen to gun down his arch enemy, rival mobster Robert "Bobby" Deluca. Only Target 12 has obtained the secret FBI recording at the center of this case.
For the first time, listen for yourself as "The Saint" tries to convince two men to commit a gangland slaying. The recording was made in April 2006.
An informant for the FBI was wired up by the feds after he was called to Anthony St. Laurent's Johnston home. The topic is chilling; an offer of cash to kill another made member of the Patriarca crime family.
Wearing a hidden recording device, an informant for the FBI walks right into the lion's den; the home of reputed Patriarca crime family capo regime, Anthony "The Saint" St. Laurent.
There are three voices on this tape: The FBI informant, mob associate Ricky Silva, now in federal prison for a separate extortion case, and aging wise guy Anthony St. Laurent. The meeting was called by "The Saint" as a job interview of sorts. The work? Gun down another mobster; Robert "Bobby" Deluca.
St. Laurent: "You interested in that other thing he told you?"
Silva: "Excuse me?"
St. Laurent: "You told him, right?"
Nardolillo: "Yeah."
St. Laurent: "You interested in that?"
Silva: "I'm going to have to talk about it."
St. Laurent: "Why?"
Silva: "I'm just ah..."
St. Laurent: "Tell me why though."
The concern for Silva? Repercussions for killing a made member of the crime family. An act that can come at the ultimate price: execution.
Silva: "You can't kill a made guy and not have justification. [Expletive] that, Tony. That's playing with [expletive] fire, man... $20,000 ain't worth me doing a life [expletive] bid in jail."
That’s just a taste of what’s on the wiretaps. Monday night on Eyewitness News at 11, we play you the recording you will hear no where else. It's a rare look inside the mafia no one outside this case has ever heard before. And what might be more revealing: what the two men St. Laurent is looking to hire, say about "The Saint" behind his back.
