(WPRI) - A reputed mob underboss is cuffed and booked, accused of bribery.

Carmen Dinunzio, "The big cheese" was slapped with a federal indictment, accusing him and two other men of trying to bribe a big dig official.

Investigators say Dinunzio offered a highway official 10- thousand dollars in cash, to secure a 6-million dollar contract to supply dirt to the massive central artery project. According to U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, the highway official was actually an undercover FBI agent, wearing a wire.

In October 2006 in a taped conversation, Dinuzio says "If the check ain't there, then I'm going to the [expletive] can cause somebody's gonna get hurt, bad."

Another defedant, Andrew Marino, was caught on tape warning of Dinunzio's power and reputation. He says: "They'll kill him, dude. This ain't some [expletive] regular hoodlum that's setting this up this is the cheese man."

Possibly the most interesting wire-tapped conversation catches one of the defendant's thumbing his nose at the possibility of becoming a made-member of the Patriarca crime family. A once coveted prospect for associates.
