Beisel takes 3rd in 200 back behind world record from Franklin

(WPRI) - North Kingstown's Elizabeth Beisel has won her second medal of the 2012 Olympic Games.

This time, in the 200-meter backstroke, it was bronze.

Teammate and fellow American Missy Franklin, the favorite coming into the event, set a world record in the race with a time of 2:04.06.

Franklin led the race from start to finish.  She had already pulled to a 1.27 second lead by the time the swimmers made it to the halfway mark.  At that point, Beisel was in fourth.

But Beisel would rally in the final 50 meters of the race to pass Great Britain's Elizabeth Simmonds to take third place with a time of 2:06.55.

Anastasia Zueva from Russia won the silver medal.

After the race, Beisel took to Twitter to give her reaction. "So excited about finishing this week on a good note. it has been amazing being a part of team USA," she wrote.

The 200 back was the final race of these Olympics for Beisel. She won medals in both events she competed in, having previously taken home the silver in the 400-meter individual medley .

It was also an improvement from Beisel's last Olympics. She finished fifth in the 200-meter backstroke finals four years ago in Beijing.

"It was awesome tonight," said Beisel. "It's a really long meet, so for us to finish strong like this is really exciting."
