Sports Director Eric Murphy anchors evening sportscasts on Eyewitness News.

If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it really make a sound? If a sports reporter starts his career in north central Montana, is he really a sports reporter? This is a question Eric Murphy has pondered since starting his non-award winning career in "Big Sky Country." (He says he wouldn’t know what an Emmy is if it walked up and bit him on the ankle). Next up a three-and-a-half year stop in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Eric started at Fox 8/ABC 23 as weekend anchor then ascended to sports director, a position he held for a year-and-a-half. “I felt like I was on top of the world,” Eric said, “but actually I was just standing on the Pennsylvania Continental Divide.”

Being a native of southern Minnesota Eric jumped at a chance to return to the Midwest. This led to a four year stay in Des Moines (pronounced Duh Moyne) where he held down the weekend anchor spot at ABC5. After getting his fill of pork chops and failing to win the coveted Iowa Mr. Corn, Eric’s eyes began to wander beyond the Great Plains.

He is happy to trade in corn chowder for clam chowder and be a part of the outstanding team at WPRI/WNAC. Living in Rhode Island also allows Eric to fulfill two of his goals: live by an ocean and feel smart when covering sporting events at an Ivy League school. Brown kids are wicked smart!

When not at the station Eric’s hobbies include meditation, PS3, going on walks with the wife, watching movies, Facebooking, flossing, reading, and trying to make new friends in the check out line at the grocery store.
