CHICAGO (AP) — The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with irritation in a bone in his left foot.
Sweeney was hitting .292 with no homers and 13 RBIs this season and is the 12th Red Sox player currently on the disabled list.
Boston recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Sweeney before facing the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.
Kalish, 24, underwent neck surgery last year and an off-season operation to repair a torn labrum. He was activated from the 60-day disabled list June 9 and sent to Pawtucket. In nine games in Triple-A, he hit .378 with four homers and 10 RBIs.
