PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The American Hockey League has named the Providence Bruins the winner of a league award for excellence off the ice.
The President's Award is given to one organization in the league each year.
The league noted the Boston Bruins' AHL affiliates in Providence grew the average number of fans at home games to about 7,800 during the 2011-12 season. The increase of just under 7 percent placed the Bruins fourth in the league in home attendance.
The league called the Bruins a leader in business growth and community relations.
The team says its players made appearances for a range of organizations, including Hasbro Children's Hospital, Special Olympics and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The team also raised money during games to help fight breast cancer.
