PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - Pawtucket Red Sox owner and local sports icon Ben Mondor passed away at the age of 85, the team confirmed Monday morning.
According to a team statement, Mondor died peacefully at his Warwick home Sunday night.
“He was an incredible and charitable man who was first and foremost devoted to his wife Madeleine, along with his PawSox family and the entire community at large.”
Gov. Donald Carcieri sent his condolences to Mondor's family and called the PawSox owner a beloved figure and a true friend.
“Ben Mondor meant a great deal more to Rhode Island than just owning a baseball team. He was a community leader who supported so many worth causes and who exemplified civic responsibility," Carcieri said.
Funeral arrangements and further details will be announced later Monday.
The Pawtucket Red Sox is the AAA minor league team for the Boston Red Sox.
