INDIANAPOLIS (WPRI) - They arrive in the mail. And they are handmade with a warm, personal note, ready to be wrapped around the thousands of Super Bowl volunteers weaving their way through Indianapolis.
The beautiful handcrafted scarves will keep volunteers warm in the cool winter weather and also provide a special connection between the volunteers and scarf creators.
Super Scarves is a program that was launched by the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee to share warmth and the Super Bowl experience with people across the country.
Months ago the Super Bowl Host Committee had hoped for 8,000 of the scarves to come from talented Indiana residents. They ended up getting more than 13,000.
“It became viral very quickly. We didn’t know there was this underground knitting and crocheting world, and so we have received scarves from 45 states, Washington D.C. and four countries beyond the United States,” said Dianna Boyce, Super Bowl Host Committee.
Some of the knitters and crocheters went above and beyond, sharing their time and talent, many times over.
Scattered throughout Super Bowl village, you’ll see the scarves. Grandmothers, single moms, and even a group of male prisoners working to re-acclimate themselves into society, all put their personal touch on this big Super Bowl week.
One woman in Rhode Island contributed to the Super Bowl scarves. The host committee said they received a scarf from Pat in West Greenwich, and they loved it, and one of the volunteers is wearing it this week.
