(WPRI) - The man who put Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on the path to the NFL has died.

Tom Martinez, the longtime quarterback guru for Tom Brady died on Tuesday.

Martinez was in poor health and on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant. The story made headlines as Brady was trying to find him a match.

Martinez was reportedly in the middle of a dialysis session on Tuesday when he suffered a heart attack and died. He died on his 66th birthday.

Martinez and Brady started working together when Brady was in high school in California and Brady gave Martinez the game ball after his first career victory in 2001.

In June of 2011 doctors gave Martinez a week to a month to live.
