(WPRI) - This week's Cardi's Hometown Sports Hero is Brent Hopkins. Brent was an All-State infielder at LaSalle Academy who earned a scholarship to play at UMass-Amherst, but his career was interrupted when he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

After returning to Rhode Island for weeks of radiation treatment, Brent enrolled at CCRI and restarted his baseball career, playing for his uncle Ken and the Knights. In his only season, the Cranston native hit over 300 with 15 RBI’s. Next year, Brent will return to Division One baseball when he heads to Kingston to play for URI.
