Classical standout continues success at UConn

STORRS, Conn. (WPRI) - Victoria Flowers left Classical High School four years ago as the top weight thrower in the nation, and she hasn't slowed down yet.

As an athlete at the University of Connecticut, Flowers has continued to shine, earning three NCAA All-American honors and becoming the all-time record holder at UConn in the weight throw.

"She's just an outstanding talent, and she's an outstanding person," UConn head track coach Bill Morgan told Eyewitness Sports. "She's one of our captains this year, and she really fits into the chemistry and the identity we feel we have on this team."

Flowers redshirted the indoor track season this year to focus on her fundamentals and prepare for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.

"It's a long process of just maturing," said Flowers. "You learn more and more about yourself. It's a different level than high school, so to stay ahead of the competition you have got to pay a lot more attention to it."

Flowers needs a throw of 64 meters to qualify for a chance at the Olympics in London.

"I'm not hitting the distances I want to yet, but my coach and I know I can compete at that level, and that's the goal for the end of the season," said Flowers.

"She's going to take of business," said Morgan. "She's working hard. We have high hopes. She's the real deal."
