Beisel is attempting to become the first Rhode Islander to win an individual Olympic gold medal.

She came into the event, which combines the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle in one race, with the best 400 IM time in the world and was the favorite to win gold according to the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated.

Ye Shiwen of China was second at 4:31.73.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who trains at the University of Southern California, was third in 4:33.77. Britain's Hannah Miley got the loudest cheers while advancing to the final in sixth.

American Caitlin Leverenz got the last spot in the eight-woman final.

The 400 IM finals are scheduled for 3:07 PM eastern time today.
