TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) -- The state transportation department is lowering the weight limit for the Sakonnet River Bridge -- though officials say it remains safe for travel.
Heavier trucks will have to find alternate routes to avoid the bridge, which carries Route 24 over the Sakonnet River and connects the towns of Tiverton and Portsmouth.
The bridge was built in 1957. Officials decided to lower the limit after the latest inspection and load rating analysis showed deterioration. Signs will be up within the next two weeks.
The state also plans to replace the existing bridge.
