PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Work has begun on a new nuclear attack submarine for the U.S. Navy.

A keel-laying ceremony will be held this morning at Quonset Point in North Kingstown for the Missouri, the seventh ship in the Navy's latest class of nuclear attack submarines.

General Dynamics Electric Boat is building the ship.

Company officials said Rebecca Gates, the wife of U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, will inscribe her initials on the submarine's keel during the ceremony.
