BOSTON (AP) - A judge has ordered the man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller held without bail, denying a request for lower bail by citing the German's history of deception.
The highly unusual move by Suffolk Superior Judge D. Lloyd Macdonald came after Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter's attorney argued many murder defendants get lower bail than the $50 million bail set by a magistrate earlier this week.
Gerhartsreiter has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the alleged kidnapping of his daughter in July in Boston. He was arrested in August in Baltimore. Macdonald said Gerhartsreiter has an "ingenious capacity" to deceive others, which made the risk of flight that much greater.
Authorities say Gerhartsreiter has used numerous aliases since coming to the United States in 1978.
