PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence roads are getting more dangerous for drivers.

The capital city now ranks third in the country for drivers most likely to get into an accident. This according to Allstate's eighth annual America's Best Drivers Report.

The report ranks the 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency, citing human error as the biggest cause of accidents.

This year's “America’s Safest Driving City” is Sioux Falls, South Dakota .

Cities joining Providence, Rhode Island, at the bottom included, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, Hialeah, Florida, and Glendale, California.

“We don’t want drivers in Providence to be discouraged by their ranking. Instead, we want the report to challenge drivers to make positive changes to their driving habits that will in turn make the city a safer place to live, work and raise families,” said Julia Reusch, Regional Spokesperson for Allstate.

In year's past Providence has ranked among the top 10 least safe driving cities, with 2006 being the only exception.

  • 2005: 7
  • 2006: 11
  • 2007: 9
  • 2008: 10
  • 2009: 8
  • 2010: 6
  • 2011: 5

Car crash fatalities are at the lowest level they’ve been since 1949, but still average more than 32,000 every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
