NEWPORT, RI (WPRI)- Many popular games enjoyed today have been born right here in Rhode Island.

Newport is recognized as the unofficial birthplace of many American outdoor games. With big lawns and even bigger mansions, Newport makes the perfect play place for some outdoor summer games.

Paul Tukey, author of "Tag, Toss & Run: 40 Classic Lawn Games", showed us some popular games with old-fashioned roots.

Bocce ball is considered by many as one of the oldest games. This simple game can be played on any flat grassy surface by any age range.

Hula hoops are also popular with kids of all ages. This game comes from the ancient practice of hoop trundling, which has its roots in Africa. Players in this game would attempt to push the hoop using a stick.

Demonstrations of these popular games will be held Sunday, June 24 at 11 a.m. at Rosecliff Mansion during the Newport Flower Show.
