If you've run out of storage space in the basement, attic or garage, a self-storage unit can be a good solution. But before you store your stuff, Problem Solver Susan Hogan has a warning.
Susan joined The Rhode Show with some important information.
The Rhode Show: What could possibly go wrong with a storage unit? You bring your own stuff in, lock it up and it just sits there until you remove it, right?
Susan: Well, in a perfect world, yes. But this isn't a perfect world and things happen.
The Rhode Show: Do a lot of people have issues with storage units?
Susan: The Better Business Bureau received more than 1,000 complaints last year about storage units. Most say they were unable to access their units, others say their belongings were damaged while in the units and others complain they were missing items.
The Rhode Show: So, what's the first thing we should do when renting storage units?
Susan: Even before you rent, visit the storage facility. You want to make sure it's clean, air conditioned, heated and also secure. Look around to make sure there are security cameras. And ask questions..a lot of them!
Important tips:
Cost: To make sure you're paying a reasonable amount, get written estimates from at least three facilities before renting. In addition to a monthly fee, costs can include storage preparation, padding and packing. There can be extra options that can add up, like electricity, pest control and insurance.
Size: What units are available, is there a maximum weight limit for contents and can you stack stored materials to the unit's ceiling?
Climate: Consider the general climate and whether your belongings could be damaged by water or mold.
Insurance: Make sure your things are insured for theft, fire or damage. You may be able to buy insurance from the storage facility or a third party. Check your homeowner's policy to see if it cover's self storage units.
Safety: Check security. Do you have to use a code to enter the facility? That's key. Is there an emergency phone in case you need to get to your belongings on off hours?
Contract: Get everything in writing.
