The Old Washington County Jail, which now serves as the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society's museum and library, has a chilling past.

It was originally built in 1792, and then had additions built in 1858.

The prison housed the sheriff and his family, debtors, women felons, and felons.

The outer walls are buried three feet in the ground and are three feet wide, and the ceilings are made of stone.  Cell doors and outside windowns are of heavy iron.

The entire building, including the sheriff/jailor's residence, was incredibly cold.

The building gives haunted Halloween tours in the fall, and is open year round Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tours begin on the half-hour, last tour at 3:30 p.m, and group tours are available by appointment.

The public and researchers are also welcome to use the extensive genealogy library.

The Old Washington County Jail is located at  2636 Kingstown Road  (Rt 138 - Across from URI/Upper College Road) , Kingston, RI 02881.  They can be reached at (401) 783-1328
