It has been more than a month since the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and still communities are coming together to show their support for Newtown.
This week, local band The Closers, will host a “Night for Newtown” fundraiser at THE MET Café in Pawtucket with proceeds benefiting the Newtown Memorial Fund.
Vice Chair of the Newtown Memorial Fund Jeff Belanger along with “The Closers Band” lead singer Peter Figueiredo joined the Rhode Show to talk about this upcoming event.
"The impact on the community still, they’re exhausted. But they are still feeling the effect of this horrible thing that happened and we’re trying to do something about it,” said Jeff Belanger, who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School as a child.
“24/7 news is not supposed to happen where you are from or where you live. Knowing every camera angle, the fields where I used to play soccer, knowing the community members and the first responders it just started to hit home like nothing ever has before,” said Jeff.
The Closers put together the event, wanting to help those who were affected.
The Closers is a family band that started when they were kids, and the group wanted to give back and do something for Newtown.
“They have been indicated with teddy bears and gifts, the town can’t take any more but it’s the support,” said Jeff.
The concert will take place on Thursday, January 24th at THE MET, Ticket information can be found here.
