(WPRI) -- Independence Day is right around the corner, and if you plan to light off some fireworks, we urge you to do it safely.

According to Problem Solver Susan Hogan , four people were killed while setting off fireworks last year, and 9,600 injuries were reported!

"Every year I try to convince myself that we don't need to do this story, then I look at the statistics and say 'okay, there's a reason for it,'" said Hogan. "Year after year, people aren't listening, they are being careless with fireworks and injuries do happen."

Here are some helpful tips to be sure your fireworks experience will be a safe one:

  • Set fireworks on a flat and dry surface.
  • Never bend over devices while lighting them.
  • Don't ever pick up a dud, just leave it alone.
  • Always have water on hand, just in case.

Hogan says that it's commonplace for illegal fireworks to be sold alongside legitimate fireworks, so never buy explosive devices unless they come with manufacturer's directions.

Also, when throwing used fireworks away, drench them in water to be sure they are fully extinguished.

Remember these tips for a safe holiday, and have a great Fourth of July!
