The Buzz: Olympic uniform controversy

Congressman calls for U.S.-made uniforms

(WPRI) -- An Olympic controversy! Many are angry after finding out that Team USA's uniforms are made in China. Now, Rep. David Cicilline is calling on the United State Olympic Committee to abandon its plans to have American athletes wear uniforms that were made in China for the opening and closing ceremonies at this year's Olympic Games in London.

Cicilline is urging the USOC to consider hiring American textile manufacturers, especially those based in Rhode Island. With the Olympic Opening Ceremony slated for July 27, the USOC stated that it would not be able to order new uniforms made in the United States.

The Brickle Group, which already manufactures berets for the United States Armed Forces along with yarn for official Major League baseballs, has stated that if it received a work order in the next 48 hours it would be able to produce berets for the Olympic Team - allowing at least a portion of their uniform to be American-made

Designer Ralph Lauren, who has a contract with the USOC through 2020, says Team USA's Olympic uniforms will be produced in the United States starting in 2014 for the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
