(WPRI) - Each week we're taking you to the movies to check out what's hot in theaters and feedback from the audience. In this week's Movies with Michaela, it's a look into a real-life experience shared by an Alaskan community, reporters, the president, and a family of whales.
Big Miracle is based on a true story of a family of whales trapped by the ice in northern Alaska.
It's a fight for all parties involved. Greenpeace wants to start an effort to save them, the whales struggle to stay alive, and the local Eskimos debate whether to help or kill the gentle giants for food.
With the harsh conditions getting worse by the hour, the Alaskan town decides to help by spending their days breaking up the ice that continues to freeze over the family of whales.
the camaraderie of the reporters, community, and even the president is so touching, even more so because this actually happened.
There's even footage of actual newscasts from when the event was taking place back in 1988.
What started in a small Alaskan town grew to a national and world wide phenomenon. All thanks to the discovery by a local reporter played by John Krasinski.
It's a battle against the elements and a heart warming tale of sacrifice, determination, and hope that these three whales will make it to safety.
Full of heart and a few laughs, Big Miracle is perfect film for the whole family.
Our next showing is Tuesday - Valentine's Day. We will be seeing another film based on a true story and perfect for a romantic night out.
