Wickford, RI - It may be chilly, but there are still plenty of activities to do outside. Eastern Mountain Sports proved the ocean isn’t just for the summertime.
Sea kayaking is a great exercise and being able to participate in the winter is a special treat.
"There's some limitations with the weather obviously were at the time of year when the water starts to get cold. So we do take a lot of precautions putting people into dry suits,” said General Manager of Eastern Mountain Sports outdoor programs, Peter Casson. He and others at EMS offer the chance to see seals while kayaking.
“They're out here in the bay. They’re here during the winter months. They arrive sometime mid to late fall from Maine and they actually go back up in the spring,” added Casson.
Eastern Mountain Sports takes groups out on the water. “We leave from here down outside of Wickford from the beach and we'll head out to a place called Rome Point. We'll give the seals quite a bit of distance because we don't want to disturb them and we'll be floating out there in our kayaks,” Casson said.
You don't need to be a pro for this activity.
“Anyone can do it. As long as you’re strong enough to hold a paddle and move the boat through the water the boat will take you,” said Casson.
Before you even step foot in a kayak, you need to wear a wetsuit provided by Eastern Mountain Sports. Along the way be on the lookout for harbor seals. Kayakers are bound to see a few upon reaching their destination: Rome Point. You have to stay at least 100 yards away from the seals at all times, so in order to see them up close you'll want to bring binoculars.
Peter suggests going out around low tide, making the rocks visible and the seals easier to spot. Plan on dressing warm and comfortably; gloves and hats are a must. The dry suits will keep the water off, but your head and hands are exposed.
Tours can be booked through Eastern Mountain Sports on their website http://www.emsexploration.com/kayak/kayak-tours/ or visit their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/EMSschools to stay updated.
