Michaela Can: Order Up!

Serving up summertime favorites at Iggy's

WARWICK, R.I.(WPRI) - Do you ever visit someone at work or watch a reality show and think "Hey, I could do that" or "I wonder what it's really like?" Well, Michaela took it to the next level. In this "Michaela Can" she found out what it takes to dish out some Rhode Island favorites at a popular summertime hot spot.

Order up! Many say summer wouldn't be complete without a stop at Iggys.

“We started off with just a small menu, we only had about ten items on the menu and now we have almost fifty. And it's just been a great process because it was a seasonal clam shack that's transformed into this year round business,” said owner, David Gravino.

From the burgers, to the chowder, they're serving to the masses rain or shine. “It's a tremendous amount of hours. You can go from doing five hundred slips to doing five thousand slips” Gravino added. Take the clamcakes for example, they need just the right ingredients to make the perfect batter. Clam juice and fresh clams are added of course, and a light mixing does the trick. They get placed in a frialator and they're ready to eat!

In the next frialator over you can find the fish. Coat it in flour and batter, wipe the excess, and place gently. In the last frialator are the doughboys, but you have to be quick if you want to man this station. These tasty treats are freshly cut and can be served plain or topped with sugar, cinnamon and sugar, or powered sugar. Shake them in a bag and they're good to go.

But fried items aren't all you can find here. An Iggy burger is made with cheese, onions, and peppers and the clamcakes wouldn't be complete without the chowder. So many jobs, so many employees, but with each one assigned a specific task, this place runs like clockwork.

Gravino says they go through 8,000 clamcakes in a single day and 4,000 doughboys, but that's just a fraction of it! So dozens of items are kept on hand to make sure nothing runs out on a busy day.

“We're known for clamcakes, chowder and doughboys, but we also have a lot of seafood dinners, fried clams, fish and chips, lobster rolls. If you don't like seafood we have burgers, we have items for the kids, chicken fingers, grilled cheese. We have a variety of salads, turkey burgers. It's just a great diverse menu,” said Gravino.

Clamcakes and doughboys can be ordered by the half dozen and dozen. Iggy’s has locations in both Narragansett and Warwick. To see their hours, locations, and other menu items visit http://www.iggysdoughboys.com/store/default.asp .
