Making and keeping resolutions

How to make resolutions stick

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Each year many people make resolutions with the best intentions, only to find they are often harder to stick than realized. But, one local YMCA wants to help make sure those resolutions are here for the long run.

Since so many people make New Year’s resolutions, in January, seven branches of the Greater Providence YMCA are offering a “Resolution Solution” which includes: A FREE Wellness Consultation and Three FREE Supervised Work-outs.

The Y staff are deemed “Resolution Experts.”

One of the major benefits of joining the Y at any time is that the staff provides the support and motivation so individuals and families can keep their health, wellness, and exercise commitments. The variety exercise options for people of all ages make the Y the perfect place for everyone to start and keep their resolutions.

The YMCA of Greater Providence branches that are offering the Resolution promotion include:

Bayside  YMCA  (Barrington)
Newman YMCA  (Seekonk, MA)
Eastside/Mt Hope YMCA   (Providence)
Cranston YMCA  (Cranston)
Kent County YMCA (Warwick)
West Bay YMCA  (North Kingstown)
South County YMCA (Peace Dale)

According to Dr. James Prochaska , there are common resolutions that people make.

Among the top resolutions are:

  1. Improving health
  2. Exercising more
  3. Losing weight
  4. Reducing stress
  5. Less “screen time” and more activity for adults and children

Good intentions made on January 1 often do not become realities because people find it difficult to start their resolution or, if they start, find it difficult to stick to their resolution.

Because keeping resolutions requires “behavior change” and changing behavior is not easy to do. However, there are processes and environments that support behavior change.

Watch the attached video to hear more from Dr. James Prochaska.
